In 1993, Atheneum sold to Baen Books the paperback rights to The Spellkey and its two sequels. My editor at Baen, Josepha Sherman, asked me to rewrite portions of The Spellkey so the differences in tone and sophistication between the first book and the two that followed wouldn't be so noticable. So I dove back in, ruthlessly deleted scenes, added new ones and even invented entirely new characters. As for the title "Spellkey Trilogy," who knows. I'm not sure I'm done with those characters yet, and I'm quite sure they're not done with me.
